Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group led by Ms. Salil Tirawat (3rd right), Executive Vice President - Corporate Management, and Ms. Piyanon Wattanachanya (2nd right), Executive Vice President - Corporate Strategy, welcomed Mr. Chakkapan Phewngam, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, as well as executives and officials from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) Lak Si District, to visit “EGCO Ecosystem”, the company’s waste management project, at its headquarters located in Lak Si District, Bangkok. The visit is aimed for both parties to exchange information and updates on “EGCO Ecosystem”, which is a sample of internal waste management in the private sector, and to increase waste management efficiency in order to minimize the garbage sent to the final destination. The cooperation between the two parties supports the BMA’s regulation on waste management service fees, which will be introduced in the future to encourage the general public and all sectors in Bangkok to reduce and separate wastes at the beginning. The new measure aims to minimize the amounts of waste transferred from the beginning to BMA’s disposal system as much as possible. 

EGCO Group’s sustainable waste management project, called “EGCO Ecosystem”, was initiated by volunteer staff in 2020 and has continued until today. This internal project has raised awareness and promoted the culture and knowledge of waste separation among EGCO Group’s employees at its headquarters. As a result, the average recycling rate has increased to 71.05% and reduced green gas emissions by 47 tCO2e. 

The success of the project has prompted EGCO Group to expand the practices to its 13 power plants across the country as well as Khanom Learning Center in Khanom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat. At the same time, the company has promoted proper electronic waste management. In the next phase, EGCO Group aims to continuously increase the recycling rate and separation rate of orphan waste which will be used for producing energy. The company will work with other organizations in managing and using organic waste, which will help reduce waste going to waste disposal facilities or landfills. As a result, waste management within the organization will be more effective and comprehensive. At the same time, it will increase positive impact on the environment and the society as well as driving the development of low carbon society.

EGCO Ecosystem project has received high recognition in Thailand and in the region. It received the “Low Carbon Business: Waste Management Award” certificate in 2021 from “Vibhavadi Zero Waste” project, and the “Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards 2022”, Green Leadership category, from the Enterprise Asia Institute in 2022. In addition, EGCO Group has further expanded the project by donating garbage bins for waste separation and sharing knowledge about waste management with temples and schools.
