EGCO Group jointly cuts ribbon on Yunlin, one of Taiwan’s largest offshore wind farms
Electricity Generating Public Company Limited or EGCO Group, led by President Jiraporn Sirikum, together with Senior Executive Vice President - Operation Management, Senior Executive Vice President - Business Development (International), and Chief Financial Officer, participated in the official inauguration of the 640 MW Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm (OWF), one of Taiwan’s largest offshore wind farms. The Yunlin OWF is now fully operational and connected to the grid. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Santiaolun Beach & Water Park in Sihu Township, and offered guests a unique view of the Yunlin OWF, located just 8 km off the picturesque coastline of Yunlin County. Esteemed guests included top executives from the joint venture partners as well as senior executives from the Taiwan government and Yunlin County government.
EGCO Group holds a 26.56% stake in Yunneng Wind Power Co., Ltd., the joint venture responsible for the project. The other stakeholders include Skyborn Renewables with 31.98%, TotalEnergies with 29.46% and Sojitz Corporation with 12%.
Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, President of EGCO Group, said, “With the inauguration ceremony, we celebrate a significant achievement for our joint venture partners, lenders and stakeholders, along with the Taiwanese government for their support throughout this project. The Yunlin OWF is not any project: It is one of Taiwan’s largest offshore wind farms. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Taiwan’s offshore wind energy sector, contributing to the nation’s transition toward clean and sustainable energy. Moreover, the Yunlin OWF is EGCO Group’s first offshore wind farm in Taiwan which contributes an additional renewable energy capacity around 170 MW equity to our portfolio. Meanwhile, EGCO Group will recognize a full-year revenue from the wind farm from 2025 onward.”
The Yunlin OWF is located in the Taiwan Strait, between 8 and 17 km off the west coast of Yunlin County in Taiwan, at water depths from 7 up to 35 m. The 82 km² project area comprises 80 wind turbine generators, each with 8 MW capacity, and the total capacity of 640 MW. Its generated electricity is fed into the Taiwanese power grid via two onshore substations near the townships of Taixi and Sihu in Yunlin County. Electricity from the project is provided to Taiwan Power Company (TPC) under 20-year power purchase agreement. The project is backed by a strong financial consortium established in 2019, including Taiwanese and international banks alongside export credit agencies.
The wind farm generates enough clean energy to power over 600,000 Taiwanese homes annually. With a capacity of 2,400 Gigawatt hours (GWh) and meeting 90% of Yunlin County's non-industrial electricity needs, the wind farm will also reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1.2 million tons per year. The Yunlin OWF is a frontrunner in protecting the environment and supporting local communities. It worked closely with fishery associations and local universities to minimize the impact on the ecosystem.
